Young dancers take to stage

- ROGER HANSON

TWO youth dance companies will light up the stage this week with their different styles of performance.

The Tasmanian Youth Classical Ballet Company will present A Night at the Ballet, which is a captivating evening of classical and neoclassical ballet at the Theatre Royal tomorrow.

On Saturday, Hobart’s new contemporary youth dance company En Pointe presents its inaugural performance In Motion at the Peacock Theatre at Salamanca Arts Centre.

Tasmanian Youth Classical Ballet Company executive producer Michelle Williams said it would be the first public performance for the company.

“Everything is coming along really well,” Mrs Williams said.

“Our aim has been to create new opportunities for young ballet dancers in Tasmania. The 26 dancers selected for the 2017 season are aged 10 to 18 years and represent five dance schools from across Tasmania and are from the north and south of our island.”

The program will feature a number of variations from popular ballets including The Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, Giselle, Le Corsaire, Paquita and Don Quixote.

On Saturday, the two En Pointe shows, at 3.30pm and 7.30pm, include a mix of contemporary ballet and tap, with guest performers Tap Jam.

En Pointe is a not-for-profit collaboration across Hobart’s dance school community designed to develop promising dancers aged 10-18 years.

In Motion will raise funds for the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation as part of the Tassie Dancers Against Cancer initiative. Tickets: www.trybooking.com/SFYI
