Rainbird keen for matches

- JAMES KITTO

LEFT-ARM quick Sam Rainbird says he put no serious thought into looking for opportunities at interstate clubs before putting pen to paper on a new one-year deal with the Hobart Hurricanes.

The 25-year-old was starved of opportunities in the Hurricanes’ Big Bash League campaign last summer, managing only one game for the tournament.

Speaking at the Hurricanes’ announcement of a new partnership with salmon giant Tassal yesterday, Rainbird said he never seriously considered seeking opportunities elsewhere despite the Hurricanes adding bowlers Tymal Mills and Tom Curran to their BBL|07 squad.

“I guess as a player who only managed the one game last season, you’d be silly not to look at your options,” he said.

“But I’m a Hobart player and have always wanted to play for the Hurricanes so hopefully I can continue to.

“It’s good to have those players signed. I’m looking forward to working with them and seeing what I can learn from them.”

Rainbird also welcomes the signing of new coach Gary Kirsten for the BBL season and says he is looking forward to what the former South African opening batsman will bring to the playing group.

“I met Gary in Perth for the JLT Cup and got to know him and how he goes about it,” he said. “He’s a very good operator.

“I’m expecting a different feel with the new coaching set up so that should be good.”

The Hurricanes are expected to have their playing list finalised in the coming weeks before the team’s first game at Blundstone Arena on December 21.
