Scorching North Hobart

- JARRAD BEVAN

WHEN houses hit the market in North Hobart, buyers have no time to lose.

Either snap a home up quickly, or risk missing out.

CoreLogic RP Data figures for the 12 months to July show that on average North Hobart homes sell in just seven days.

Across Australia there are only four suburbs averaging sales in seven days, two are in Hobart — Warrane and North Hobart — the others are South Penrith in Sydney and Diggers Rest in Melbourne.

There are 24 Australian suburbs that sell in nine days or less and over half of them are in the Hobart area.

Ross Murdoch and Will Simon have just listed their six-bedroom 1849 Elphinstone Rd house and so far most of the interest has come from locals who have children at schools in the area.

Dr Simon said it had been a privilege to live in and look after a “piece of colonial history” for the past 12 years and he’d had second thoughts about letting go of Elstonleigh.

However, when it comes down to it, it’s easier to downsize in your 50s than your 60s, he said.

Petrusma property consultant Annie Jacometti said there was strong competition for every property listed in North Hobart.

There simply were not enough properties for sale to meet the demands of the huge number of potential buyers, she said.
