Don’t run election yet
KEEP the Glenorchy City commission in place and allow commissioner Sue Smith and her team to complete the job. Why act now on elections in Glenorchy? January is too soon to sort out this mess. The next local government elections are scheduled for September-October next year. It is perhaps best for Glenorchy to work towards the elections due in 2022. Every Glenorchy citizen will be five years older and it is possible our community will have an appetite for a new council or other options.
Commissions are not new, seven have been appointed since 1934, including Clarence in 1957 and Kingborough in 1960. It seems that in the past, “each of the commissions were able to bring harmony, ability and greater efficiency in the areas in which they operated”. Let’s have some of that in Glenorchy, after five or so years of good governance led by our focused commissioner and her staff, maybe a new elected representative body. INCREASING the number of hours a learner driver must do is of little benefit without adequate training. Too many times I have seen learners doing the wrong thing and the licensed driver oblivious. Learners should be required to do a certain number of lessons with a professional instructor which could be subsidised by the road safety levy and drivers should have to undergo accreditation before being allowed to supervise a learner.
North Hobart match
North Hobart? Surely the convenience and amenities of North Hobart are more conducive to a big crowd, given the following of the biggest club Collingwood and building interest in the Kangaroos. While Kingston might have bigger dimensions, it has minimal infrastructure and this is a pre-season practice match not needing MCG dimensions. Can the Tasmanian AFL please clarify and justify the reasoning for the proposal?
