Waiting in breathless anticipation
THE Derwent Valley Concert Band’s latest work is set to leave the audience gasping for more when it is presented in Hobart next weekend. The DVCB will present
Breathtaking at the Stanley Burbury Theatre at the University of Tasmania’s Sandy Bay campus.
Breathtaking features five works by five different composers, which are all written as personal responses to some of the great wonders of the world.
The first piece, Lauds, is, in the
words of composer Ron Nelson, “an exuberant, colourful work intended to express feelings of praise and glorification”.
Sunrise at Angel’s Gate, by Philip Sparke, reflects on the sights and sounds of one of the rock formations on the northern side of the Grand Canyon.
The third piece, Microtopia, is a tribute from Belgian composer Bert Appermont to Sir David Attenborough, Attenborough’s documentaries, and the tiny animals that he investigates.
October, by Eric Whitacre, was written about the composer’s favourite time of year.
Finally, Paris Sketches is a tribute by British composer Martin Ellerby to a city he loves and to other composers who lived, worked or simply passed through the French capital.
The Derwent Valley Concert Band presents Breathtaking at the Stanley Burbury Theatre next Sunday (November 5) from 2.30pm.
Entry is via a donation.
