Mare has big appeal

- PETER STAPLES

WELL-BRED mare Life On The Wire looks one of the best bets on the eight-event program in Launceston tonight.

Life On The Wire will line up as top weight in a Class 3 handicap over 1200m.

The Scott Brunton-trained mare resumed from a spell with a game win on an unsuitable heavy track in Launceston a month ago, but she has been given plenty of time to recover.

Life On The Wire contested most of the good three-year-old feature races last season until it was discovered she was not as competitive over the longer journeys.

“I put this mare in a couple of distance races and she just couldn’t stay and even though she was placed, she never handled the longer trips,” Brunton said.

“Even last start she was well out of her comfort zone on a heavy track but she still won because she is such a quality galloper.

“She’s been through a lot this mare, so hopefully she can get through a solid prep.”

Life On The Wire has had nine starts for three wins and four minor placings.

She should only need to avoid trouble to make it four wins.

The John Blacker-trained Seajamm has been placed two of her past three starts in a similar class, so she warrants plenty of respect, while Charlemagne’s Girl, Boart and Mon Londo also rate as strong place hopes. THE two fillies who fought out the 2YO Tasmanian Magic Millions Classic, Heaven’s Delight and Derasa, resume tonight in a Class 1 handicap (Race 1).

Derasa has had two trials and won both, while the Gary White-trained Heaven’s Delight will go into the race without a trial.

The race boasts some wellperformed older and more experienced horses, but the three-year-old fillies are expected to play dominant roles in the feature 3YO sprint races this season, so they are expected to also dominate betting.
