No pay penalises Broad, says AFL

- JON RALPH

THE AFL is “satisfied” with Nathan Broad’s three-match suspension, believing $20,000 in lost earnings means he will not escape lightly from the sexting controversy.

AFL boss Gillon McLachlan said Broad’s actions were “a dramatic breach of trust” by the 24year-old Tigers defender.

He can play in the JLT challenge and VFL during his AFL suspension and return in Round 4 if his form warrants.

But he will not receive AFL match payments worth up to $20,000 in that time, which the AFL factored into its consideration of his penalty.

The three-match penalty approved by the AFL under its respect and responsibility policy has been roundly criticised as too light.

But McLachlan believes the next penalty over this type of incident will be much harsher, adamant Broad’s financial penalty is also relevant. “I think it was a dramatic breach of trust and an incredibly poor decision,” he said yesterday.

“You can’t speculate on what would happen [if another player transgressed] but the lesson is there for all. Whether it’s three, four or five [weeks], it’s a strong statement and strong accountability for a player who has made a very poor decision.”

The AFL Commission has ticked off on its updated respect and responsibility code after first pledging a revamp in January last year.
