Sorell overcome Kingboroug­h, and the weather

IN wet and windy conditions, Sorell finished strongly to record a good 18-shot win over Kingboroug­h in Bowls South Division One Women’s Pennant on Thursday and in doing so jumped into the top four.

Kingboroug­h started well and was eight shots in front at the lunch break but was unable to maintain the momentum.

Jan Cowen got Sorell off to the perfect start, scoring a seven on the first end against Jean Hemmings and led by 10 shots at the lunch break. With Vicki Wakefield leading well all day, Cowen went on to win by 21 shots.

Leona Smith trailed Carmel Rainbird by four shots at the break but Smith fought back strongly to record a seven-shot win.

Kingboroug­h won on the other rink, with Leonie Price in front all day against Sandra Hawksley, thanks to great leading by Sue Mann, eventually winning by 10 shots.

Howrah defeated Brighton by 18 shots. Rosie Geeves finished 12 shots in front of Judy Williams. Lynne McDougall battled Barbara Rubock, winning by four shots in a tight tussle. Charon Foster defeated Sue Wilton.

Foster went into the last end with the scores tied and picked up two shots to make it a clean sweep for Howrah.

Dover RSL remains undefeated recording an eight-shot win at home against Claremont. Barb Liddington defeated Joy Voss by nine shots and Sonia Martyn beat Rae Freestone by six shots. Claremont picked up two points with Gaye Coleman finishing seven shots in front of Carol Bannister.

Sandy Bay retained top spot on the ladder with a 20-shot win over Rosny Park. Robyn Leggett defeated Ailsa Milburn by 21 shots. Yvonne Buckley and Gaylene Ridgeway fought desperatel­y all day with Ridgeway scoring two shots on the last end to draw the game. Christine McGrath was Rosny Park’s only winner, scoring four shots on the final end to beat Chris Dowl by one shot.

Buckingham bounced back from its narrow three-shot loss to Dover RSL on Tuesday to record a four-shot away win over New Norfolk. With scores level after 17 ends, Allison Chamberlai­n scored 12 shots on the final four ends to defeat Lyn Triffitt by 11 shots. Glenda Ormerod came from behind to beat Carol Banks-Smith by one shot. New Norfolk won on the other rink with Leonie Hyland defeating June Guy by eight shots.
