Mo Bros celebrate life of mate

- ALEX LUTTRELL

NOBODY at the OHA Hockey Club saw Ed Cranwell’s death coming, but the players are doing their best to honour his memory by speaking up about mental health.

Last October, Ed took his life at 21, crushing his teammates, family and friends.

But to honour him, some of the club’s players are again growing moustaches as part of their Movember Foundation fund-raising team called “Ed’s Mo Bros”.

Last year the group, which has 40 members, raised $44,000 to help the foundation fund research into prostate and testicular cancer as well as mental health and suicide prevention among Australian men.

Mo Bros member and OHA player Sam McCambridge said no one had a clue about Ed’s mental health.

“The last time we saw him was at the end of year dinner and he was as happy as Larry,” Mr McCambridge said.

“Then two weeks later it happened, but no one saw he was struggling.”

He said Ed’s death and their campaign had brought the club and its players closer together.

“A few guys in the team have come out and said they have depression, too,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Mobart Mo Bros are aiming to top the nation again as the highest fund-raising team for the second year running after raising $132,000 in 2016.

Led by captain Tom Windsor, they have raised more than $450,000 since their inception in 2006. Anyone seeking support and information about suicide prevention can contact Lifeline on 131 114
