Peroni hot property for 2018 Eurocup

- JAMES BRESNEHAN

A TOP-10 finish in his debut season has Hobart’s teenage sensation Alex Peroni on the most-wanted list by Eurocup teams ahead of next year’s championship.

The 17-year-old driver’s form drew the attention of opposition teams, who are now chasing his services.

Peroni has been approached by most Eurocup teams about driving for them next year and he tested with two of the biggest outfits in Barcelona and Belgium respectively this week before heading home.

“Nearly all teams have contacted Alex and have expressed interested in having him race with them next year,” Alex’s father Piero said.

“They know that typically drivers target winning the championship in their second year if they have been competitive on debut. Before returning to Australia, Alex accepted to test for two of the high-profile teams.”

Piero said Alex was rapt with his first Eurocup season and was excited about next year.

“Given his amazing start to the series we had even hoped for a top five finish,” Piero said.

“However a couple of accidents not of his making set things back a little.

“Alex and his management group have learnt a lot from the last few months, learnings that will be invaluable in preparing for the 2018 season.

“Despite the offers, as always, Alex will need to find funding to compete in 2018 and we remain hopeful that he will have the opportunity to give the championship a red hot go.”

Peroni scored enough points at the final round in Spain last weekend to secure 10th place in the championship.

“In Barcelona we had some good form and the points got us over the line to finish 10th, which we are all very happy about,” Alex said. “This is a very tough series with 30 drivers from around the world and all at a very competitive level, so to finish 10th is a great result in our first year.”
