Take courage

House origins

THOSE who plea for independents in the Upper House have clearly forgotten the origin of the Legislative Council. It was set up to block the more radical Lower House over 160 years ago which is why it has this weird rotation of partial elections every May and the power to block all legislation, making it the most powerful Upper House in the Westminster system.

Over the years, independent has become code for exmember of the Liberal Party.

The obvious best option is one chamber with 45 or so members which would provide enough ministers, rather than wasting money on expensive consultants. Critics who say we have too many MPs forget how many departments there are in the state, so ministers have several portfolios each, which is clearly beyond them.

Disease risk

AS a lifelong dog carer, I am appalled at the irresponsible behaviour of some dog carers/ owners (Letters, November 8). This does not mean cats are not a serious issue. They are a major predator of wildlife and carry a nasty disease, toxoplasmosis. This results in the death of wildlife and potentially serious illness to humans, particularly pregnant women. There is also worrying research indicating humans infected with toxoplasmosis are at increased risk of psychiatric conditions. Toxoplasmosis is a major cause of loss to the sheep industry, calculated at $17,451.221. WE rightfully condemn those who mistreat animals, fining and often jailing them, yet are treating defenceless human beings far worse on Manus Island. Denying the basics required to survive, to force people to do your bidding is nothing short of criminal. I implore decent Australians to stand up for these unfortunate people. It takes a person with courage to admit they are wrong. It seems we have very few courageous people representing us.
