Sandy Bay bursts Dover’s bubble

- ROB McGUIRE

AFTER winning its first three games in Bowls South Division One Women’s Pennant, Dover RSL received a reality check on Thursday when it was soundly beaten by Sandy Bay by 36 shots.

Robyn Leggett raced to a big lead against Barb Liddington, who fought back to give Dover RSL hope but dropped 12 shots in the last two ends, ensuring a 21-shot Leggett win.

Chris Dowl played some great conversion bowls against Sonia Martyn and charged to an 11-shot lead before Martyn steadied to score six shots in the three ends before lunch. Greater consistency by Dowl turned the game back in her favour and a 12-shot win.

Yvonne Buckley and Carol Bannister had a close game. Bannister started strongly but Buckley produced consistent bowls in the middle ends to win by three shots.

Rosny Park won a thrilling contest against Kingborough by two shots. Kingborough started well and was eight shots in front at the lunch break but could not maintain the momentum. Ailsa Milburn set up the victory for Rosny Park with a convincing 11-shot win over Carmel Rainbird.

Gaylene Ridgeway was behind Kathleen Page for most of the day before Ridgeway fought back to take the lead on the 17th end. Page then won three of the last four ends to force a draw. Kingborough’s Leonie Page led Christine McGrath throughout the game to win by nine shots.

Brighton won its first game for the season with a 13-shot win over Sorell. Val Lukasek outplayed Leona Smith to win by 13 shots. Judy Williams played some great bowls to defeat Sandra Hawksley by eight shots. Sorell’s Jan Cowan was too good for Glenda Rubock winning by eight shots.

Claremont defeated New Norfolk by 12 shots, and Howrah jumped into second spot with a convincing 36-shot win over Buckingham.
