Mercury (Hobart)

Wonderful site for museum

- S. Ireland Bellerive Pete Donkersley Hobart Ciaran Rayner Claremont

A SUM OF $200,000 a year to maintain this beautiful historic Treasury building is a drop in the bucket compared to the millions poured into Forestry Tasmania to prop it up. Christopher Merridew is right, it would make a wonderful extension to the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (Talking Point, November 10). We have thousands of proposed hotel beds in the pipeline; the Treasury building should be preserved for public use, not given over to yet another developer to profit from. It is so well sited within the city/waterfront precinct, I’m sure thousands of tourists would love to look inside if the opportunity arose. I’m pleased the government is open to all considerations and hopefully will listen to community concerns.

The Hobart sniff

I OPPOSE air bridges in Hobart like everywhere else because we have something different. Taxi drivers have told of the “Hobart sniff” as passengers come out of the plane and are greeted with a breath of fresh air, their heads tilted back drawing in beautiful fresh air and experiencing Tasmania on the first step. What’s wrong with saying welcome to Tasmania, here is today’s weather. Tasmania should maintain its unique characteristics and its idiosyncrasies, celebrate its differences. lian values of compassion, empathy and altruism in making a generous offer and in my opinion should be highly commended. toral roll is at its highest since Federation. With 100,000 Australians added to the roll, you can be certain of a more reflective result at the next election.
