Public hospital mess a disgrace

- Scott White Sorell

THE bed block and delay at our public hospitals are a disgrace. It is not just the fault of the current government but has vastly worsened over the last 24 months Ramping of ambulances and lack of emergency beds are indicative of a third -world country. The ambulance and emergency medical staff are doing a fine job but with one hand tied behind their backs by not enough beds, resources and staffing. The Liberal Government inherited problems but has failed to correct the chaos. If it is not improved quickly many lives will be lost. The private hospital departments don’t have the staff or beds to cover the shortfall. Private emergency departments charge a fee not covered by health funds or Medicare.

I am positive if our procrastinating politicians wanted emergency health care they would jump to the front of the queue and not have to wait in a crowded emergency area in the hope they could be seen before it was too late. I am also sure there will be a war-chest of resources trotted out in time for the next elec- tion. Our health minister is like his cohorts in that he over-promises but under-delivers. I fervently hope someone in authority promises to actually do something about the dangerous and chaotic mess that is our emergency health services. I can’t see any of the political parties standing up for the public. They don’t care because it does not affect them personally. It is a disgrace and will cost the Liberal Party power.
