Last post for Batman’s city council parody page

- SIMEON THOMAS-WILSON

THE operator of the parody Hobart City Council Facebook page says they will no longer post “funny content” of the inner workings of the council.

The page prompted the council to go to police in an attempt to have it shut down.

Run by an administrator referring to themself as “Batman”, the parody page gathered more than 10,000 likes on the social media website, with many mistaking it for the council’s official page.

The page publishes fake news articles and other material critical of the council with criticism on the site often directed at Hobart Lord Mayor Sue Hickey.

But yesterday “Batman” announced they would no longer post on the page, which would soon be deleted.

“So this is it. The last post,” they wrote.

“I have decided to end the shenanigans. Like all good things this too must come to an end. It has been increasingly hard to write funny content when you get to know about the inner workings of HCC. So when it ceases to be fun, it is time to end it.”

In the post, “Batman” produces one last rant about the Taste of Tasmania, saying the council had “killed” the foodie community that established the event.

Alderman Hickey said the page started out being funny but quickly lost its humour.

“To give it credit it was funny, but it got sour and personal,” she said.

“I just think it’s had its day, I hope there are no more of these things.”

Ald Hickey and Hobart general manager Nick Heath went to police with a dossier of evidence about the abuse directed at the Lord Mayor in an unsuccessful attempt to have the page shut down.
