Inquiry into sexual abuse claims at Hobart school

- JESSICA HOWARD

AN elite Hobart private school has confirmed it received a complaint from a former student alleging they had been sexually abused by a former senior member of staff.

The Friends’ School yesterday confirmed it was contacted last week by a former student, and had sent a letter to the school community, including old scholars, current families and staff informing them of the allegation.

“The school has spoken to Tasmania Police about the matter and has arranged for an independent investigation to be undertaken immediately,” principal Nelson File said.

“Because of the nature of the complaint, and the fact that an independent investigation is under way, the school is unable to make further comment about the specifics of the matters raised.

“I can confirm that the for- mer member of staff has not worked at the school for numerous decades.”

Mr File said the school, based in New Town, was formally advised about the matter and had since expressed its “deep concern” for the former student’s well being directly to them.

It is not known when the abuse is alleged to have occurred.

In the letter sent to the school community and seen by the Mercury, Mr File wrote: “I felt it appropriate that you should hear this information directly from me.

“Naturally I am shocked and horrified by an allegation of this nature.

“The school abhors all abuse, especially of children, whose social, emotional and spiritual well being is central to the purpose and concerns of The Friends’ School,” he wrote.
