- ROB McGUIRE

HOWRAH consolidated second position on the ladder in Bowls South Division One Women’s Pennant on Thursday when it defeated Sorell by 16 shots despite only winning on one rink.

The game was played on Howrah’s indoor synthetic green due to continuous rain throughout the morning.

Lynne McDougall set up the win for Howrah, defeating Leona Smith by 24 shots. Sorell won on the other two rinks.

Jan Cowan started slowly against Charon Foster and trailed by 13 shots after nine ends but, with Julie Pursell playing some great draw bowls and Cowen herself playing well, Cowen came out after the lunch break and turned the game around, eventually winning by six shots. Sandra Hawksley started well against Rosie Geeves and had opened up an 11-shot lead by the lunch break and increased the lead to 17 shots after 14 ends. However Geeves fought back strongly to lose by just six shots.

Because of poor weather, Dover RSL asked to swap home games and travelled to the Kingborough Indoor Centre, where Kingborough proved too good, winning on two rinks by 10 shots.

Leonie Price remained the only unbeaten skip in the competition with another good team effort defeating Barb Liddington by seven shots. Carmel Rainbird and Carol Bannister had a tight tussle. After a slow start, Bannister opened up a four-shot lead after lunch, but Rainbird won five of the last six ends to win by five shots. Sonia Martyn edged out Kathleen Page by two shots.

Buckingham overcame a determined Claremont, win- ning by seven shots. Jeanette Lane made her debut as a skip in Division One and did it in style, easily defeating Rae Freestone by 24 shots.

Claremont won on the other two rinks. Joy Voss lost the first two ends against Glenda Ormerod to trail by four but controlled the game after that restricting Ormerod to just five more shots and a convincing 13- shot victory. Gaye Coleman led Alison Chamberlain for most of the game to eventually win by four shots.

Sandy Bay travelled to New Norfolk, winning on two rinks by 45 shots. Chris Dowl was unstoppable, accounting for Carol Banks-Smith by 38 shots. Robyn Leggett defeated Leonie Hyland by 12 shots with New Norfolk picking up two points when Lyn Triffitt beat Yvonne Buckley by five shots.
