Bring on cable car and high-rises

- Maurice C. Wise South Hobart

FOR quite a few years I have heard and read all the negative comments about the cable car and the high-rise buildings in Hobart. Nobody has thought about the condition of the road and with the forecast of increased tourism, just about everyone who visits will want to travel to the mountain. The road is in good shape, but won’t last many more years. The road was probably not designed to handle the volume of traffic or the size of the coaches. So the cable car is going to be a very good alternative. I don’t suppose many people have heard of the massive landslide that closed the road for many months to the top. I have been on cable cars in Cairns, Cape Town and one of the steepest on Mt Pilatus in Switzerland and you have to look hard to see them from the towns and highways.

The high-rise hotels are a must to cater for tourism and for the jobs in construction and staffing, all positive for the economy. As for comments about the height blocking the view of the mountain and shading the waterfront, they are rubbish. Just walk around the CBD and find where you can see the mountain and some of the buildings are only two or three storeys. Every building including homes casts a shadow at some time during the day. So all the negative, selfish and greenie people who want everything to suit themselves and think they are right and all others wrong, get over it and accept the changes for the better. Otherwise we will be living in the 50s and 60s. To the Government and Hobart City Council, approve these developments because the positives are endless.
