Rodman breaks down the fortress

- ROB McGUIRE

GLENORCHY Rodman has done what no other club has been able to achieve for almost three years when it defeated Buckingham on its synthetic fortress in Bowls Tasmania South Premier Division on a wet and stormy Saturday afternoon.

Tony Vince raced to a 17 shot lead over Mick Taylor at the break and increased that to 23 shots after 14 ends. A minirevival by Taylor, including a seven on the 16th end, reduced the margin to 11 shots before Vince rallied eventually winning by 12 shots.

Glenorchy Rodman’s win was due to a remarkable turnaround by Luke Turner who trailed Stuart Rees by six shots after 17 ends, however Turner won the last eight ends including 12 shots on the last three ends to win by 11 shots.

Buckingham won on the other two rinks with Keghan Booth defeating Josh Baker by nine shots and Alvin Cooke beating Cam Tegg by five shots after scores were level going into the last end.

Rosny Park jumped out of the gates early in its match against New Norfolk, leading by 20 shots after 25 ends.

A severe drop in green speed, after a storm delayed play for an hour, didn’t slow Rosny Park down.

Lee Schraner was the big winner of the day, beating Kerry Hill by 24 shots. David Genford was too strong for Wayne Lampkin, winning by 13 shots, Paul Williamson defeated Mitch Banks by eight shots and Mick Sweeney beat Barry Bone by four shots.

Beltana suffered a heartbreaking one-shot split-rinks loss to Sandy Bay.

Nick Courto defeated Andrew Norris by seven shots and Owen O’Driscoll defeated Josh Mabb by four shots.

Sandy Bay’s Josh Tegg won a tight game by three shots over Shane Young, but it was Brad Mabb with a convincing nine-shot win over Michael Coppleman that helped Sandy Bay to the one-shot win.

Claremont defeated Brighton by two shots in a split-rinks decision. Jack Ellis defeated Greg Fehlberg by five shots and Tony Hack beat David Cure by five shots.

Brighton won on the other two rinks with Mick Daniels defeating Alan Smith by five shots and Grant Wakefield finished three shots in front of John Howard.

Confusion over whether the Derwent City green was closed after a storm led to the Derwent City and Kingborough game being abandoned with the clubs splitting the points.
