GLENORCHY DENIED BY RAIN ON BRINK OF VICTORY

- BRETT STUBBS

LATE rain robbed Glenorchy of an almost certain outright win over University yesterday in the cruellest of fashions.

After dismissing Uni for 42 on Saturday, the Magpies declared at 4-133, a lead of 91, and let loose their bowlers on the Lions once again at KGV. Again the bowlers did the job, running through the visitors for 125, a lead of 34.

Tim Spotswood was unplayable, taking 6-22 to go with his first innings of 4-5 to have match figures of 10-27.

Chasing 34 for outright victory, Glenorchy was off to a wobbly start in the chase, losing three wickets for no runs with only eight runs in total on the board.

Soon after the heavens opened again, forcing an end to the match with the Pies needing a further 25 for victory.

Clarence was also in a dominant position in its heavyweight clash with Kingborough at Kangaroo Bay.

The Roos declared at their overnight score of 3-236 and then set about running through the Knights.

Tigers squad quick Cameron Stevenson was the destroyer with 5-31, with excellent support from captain Harry Allanby (4-34) as the Knights were dismissed for 124.

Sent back in, the visitors were 2-39 when rain forced an early end to play.

Kingborough captain Nathan Freitag, coming off the Knights’ first double century the week before, came back to earth with a thud, scoring six and a duck.

The New Town v South Hobart-Sandy Bay and Lindisfarne v North Hobart games were both called off without any play yesterday due to the weather.
