Children celebrate all abilities
A DAY where Hobart students celebrate inclusiveness for people with disabilities could be run again next year, the Education Department says.
Hobart school students came together for a picnic at Bellerive Beach Park yesterday to celebrate International Day of People with Disability. The theme of the initiative this year was “all abilities” and the schools event was an opportunity for students to come together, generate awareness and celebrate inclusiveness near the newly built all abilities playground.
Special Olympics athletes were on hand to play games with the students as well as representatives from the Hobart Hurricanes, Variety Tasmania, Guide Dog puppies and All Abilities Sports.
The all abilities playground was opened by Clarence City Council in August and has been designed for all ages and abilities with wheelchair and mobility aid access.
An Education Department spokeswoman said it was a perfect opportunity to celebrate the day with a picnic.
“The Bellerive Beach all abilities park offered the ideal venue and the event was supported by a number of organisations,” she said.
“Due to the success of the day it is envisaged that a similar event could be held to celebrate the day again next year.”
Franklin MP Nic Street said the event also sought to raise awareness for the Education Department’s disability programs in government schools.
Meanwhile, the Clarence City Council’s Festival of Smiles, which was due to be held on Sunday in line with the International Day of People with Disability event, was cancelled because of the weather.
There are plans to reschedule the festival.
