Howrah in upset over Sandy Bay

- ROB McGUIRE

HOWRAH caused a major upset by inflicting Sandy Bay’s first loss for the season in Bowls Tasmania South Division One Women’s Pennant on Thursday.

Charon Foster capitalised on a strong start for Howrah and raced to a convincing 14-shot win over Laura Best. Sandy Bay’s Chris Dowl started strongly against Rosie Geeves and went to an early lead but a five to Geeves on the 10th end turned the tables. Lynne McDougall was outplayed by Sandy Bay’s Yvonne Buckley. Four shots in two ends with close bowls from Ros Jones and Sally Ridgeway narrowed the gap but Buckley steadied and won the last four ends to win by eight shots.

Sorell defeated New Norfolk by 34 shots. Jan Cowen had an easy win over Leonie Hyland. Cowen led by 12 shots after just three ends, eventually winning by 31 shots. Leona Smith was well supported by her three Julie Pursell in her 16-shot win over Di Jones. With Gwen Scott leading well all day and with strong support from Barbara Walker and Shirley Hay, Hawkesley defeated Carol Banks-Smith by seven.

Buckingham was too strong for Brighton, winning by five shots. June Guy played some great shots and, despite a good fightback by Sue Grant after the lunch break, won by nine shots. In a game that was tight all day and level going in to the last end, Alison Chamberlain, who played some big shots when required during the game, was able to move a bowl on the last end to get over Judy Williams by one shot. Brighton’s Val Lukasek put in a strong performance, beating Jeanette Lane by five shots.

Rosny Park lost its first three games of the season but bounced back for its second win in a row, this time at the expense of Dover RSL, who won its first three games of the season but has not won since. Ailsa Milburn won by 12 shots, Chris McGrath by 11 shots and Gaylene Ridgeway by five shots.

Kingborough defeated Claremont in an early round eight game, winning by 12 shots. Kathleen Page had a solid 12-shot win against Joy Voss. Leonie Price defeated Rae Freestone by six shots. Claremont won on the other rink with Gaye Coleman winning by six shots over Carmel Rainbird.
