Lions’ go-slow proves costly

- ADAM SMITH

UNIVERSITY has been made to pay for a slow over rate by helping Clarence to victory in their CTPL Twenty20 clash last night.

Defending a modest 7-121, the Lions bowlers kept their side in the contest by limiting the Roos’ power players, but the lack of urgency came back to bite them.

Clarence went into the final over needing 12 runs for victory and with a solitary wicket in hand. Then the gift. The Lions had failed to get through their overs in the allotted time so they were penalised six runs.

Clarence now needed just six, allowing Fletcher Seymour and Jyles Horne to pick off a single every ball to reach their target.

At New Town, Caleb Jewell continued his strong Twenty20 form with a knock that lifted North Hobart to victory.

Jewell, who has impressed in several outings with the Hurricanes Academy squad, cracked 81 from 54 balls as the Demons racked up 7-172.

Jewell dominated an opening stand of 96 with Luke Williams (22) to set the tone for the total, with Corey Murfet (24) also pitching in.

The Bucks’ chase got off to a horror start when Danny Lamb was trapped in front for a fourth ball duck, before Josh Doyle fell cheaply soon after.

But with contributions from Joe Randall (41) and coach Brad Loveluck (42 not out from 22 balls), the home side put up a gallant fight, eventually just falling short at 6-162.

Late Hurricanes signing Nathan Reardon has wasted little time warming up to Hobart grade cricket, clubbing a 48-ball unbeaten 73 for Kingborough as the Knights compiled 7-145 against Glenorchy at KGV.

The Pies finished 7-126 in reply, with Tom Rogers providing the only meaningful contribution with 46.

At Queenborough, a 106run opening partnership between Ben McDermott (73 not out) and Matthew Dance (50) was not enough for Lindisfarne.

Dance took a while to get going in his run-a-ball knock, as the Lightning posted a competitive 4-156.

However it was not enough as the Sharks hauled in the target in the 17th over, with Harry Nichols 59 not out.

At the under-19 national championships, Tasmania has pulled off a huge upset by defeating Victoria Metro in the first ever underage match under lights at UTAS Stadium.

The Tigers restricted the visitors to 8-192 from their 50 overs, Jarrod Freeman starring with 4-23 from 10 overs, including three maidens.

In-form trio Keegan Oates (68), Jack White (51) and Dylan Hay (40 not out) then produced calm, calculated knocks to guide the hosts home by six wickets with 17 balls to spare.
