South sews up seniors title

- ROB McGUIRE

BOWLS Tasmania South teams emerged unbeaten from the first two rounds of APIA’s Statewide Seniors Challenge (over 60s) at Kings Meadows on Tuesday.

The competition involves representative teams from Hobart, Launceston and the North West Coast.

In the morning the Southern Men defeated North 2 by 34 shots and the Southern Women beat North 2 by 45 shots. Games were closer in the afternoon when the Southern Men de- feated North 1 by 15 shots and Southern Women beat North 1 by eight shots. THE Bowls Tasmania South Open and B Grade Pairs Championships will conclude this Sunday with finals at Sandy Bay (men) and Kingborough (women).

In the sectional play last Sunday, winners in the Men’s Open Championships were Paul Williamson and Mick Sweeney, Peter Bannister and Ross Bannister, David Douce and Rick Ormerod, Keghan Booth and Grant Chamberlain, Cam Tegg and Josh Baker, Lee Schraner and Brad Griffiths and John Sutcliffe and John Nichols.

In the Men’s B Grade Championships, sectional winners were Tony Davies and Phil Richardson, Garry O’Brien and Michael Hughes, Michael Hayes and Dino Di Domenico, Michael Johnson and Jim Johnson, Michael Behrend and Kevin Mann and Brad and David Johns.

Six of the twelve finalists hail from the St John’s Park Bowls Club.

In the Women’s Open Championships, sectional winners were Julie Pursell and Jeanette Lane, Lynn Barlow and Ann Hinkley, Yvonne Buckley and Peri Buckley, June Guy and Amity Booth, Carol Bannister and Meg Wilson and Jan McPherson and Helena Gaylor. THE Tasmanian Men’s team staged an impressive comeback to win the 4th and 5th tests against Victoria in the annual French Holbrook Tasmania v Victoria Test Series. The series was held at the Deer Park Bowls Club in Victoria last week, taking the series win 3-2. This series win means that the Tasmanian Men’s side holds shields against Victoria, South Australia, Queensland and the ACT. The only shield the men play for that they don’t have is the Alley Shield from the Australian Sides Championships, where they finished second and were a jack rebounding out of the ditch from having that shield as well.

Victoria’s women won their five-Test series against Tasmania, winning all five tests.

Joint Tasmanian men players of the series were Chris Dudman and Robert McMullen. The women’s players of the series were Erin Sesara and Amelia Bruggy.
