Season’s recruits look handy for Hurricanes

- ADAM SMITH

INTERNATIONAL signings Jofra Archer and Tymal Mills have impressed in their first outings for the Hobart Hurricanes as the team finalises preparations for BBL07.

With several spots for the opening match of the tournament next Thursday still up for grabs, the Hurricanes have flown its squad to New South Wales for two warm-up games.

The Hurricanes had a victory on Monday against the Sydney Sixers at North Dalton Park in Wollongong and will now travel to Traralgon to take on the Melbourne Stars tomorrow night.

D’Arcy Short’s 54 off 41 balls was the top score for Hobart and opening partner Alex Doolan (27 off 22), who was yesterday named as the injury replacement player for David Moody, also looked good.

When Archer walked to the crease to join Dan Christian, Hobart had suffered a minicollapse of 4-25 but Christian (20 not out off 17 balls) and Archer (22 not out off 10 balls) got the side to a competitive score of 6-164.

The Hurricanes’ bowlers were then too good for the Sixers, especially the new import duo. Leg spinner Cameron Boyce was excited by his new teammates and thinks they will complement the rest of Hobart’s bowlers.

“It was exciting to see what our internationals were like and the boys bowled really well,” Boyce said.

“The boys look like they have a bit of pace, and their change of pace and variety is world class.”

Boyce was happy with his own form in the first game and he hopes him and his team can finish off its preparation with another win.

“The ball came out quick nicely and I was able to stick to the plans I was trying to do,” Boyce said. “They (the Stars) are a very good team, they are every year. They have a lot of power hitters.”
