Man on shooting charge

- LORETTA LOHBERGER

A CLAREMONT man has been charged with grievous bodily harm after a woman was shot in the stomach at a home in Hobart’s northern suburbs.

The man, 23, was taken into custody after the shooting on Thursday night.

He was charged yesterday afternoon.

The 27-year-old woman remained in hospital yesterday, but her injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Detective Inspector Craig Joel said police investigations were continuing.

“Any sort of shooting or any sort of wound from a firearm has the potential to be deadly and so we’re taking it very seriously,” he said.

Inspector Joel said police were called to a home in Cammeray Rd, Claremont, on Thursday night.

He said the man, woman, and two children were at the house when police arrived.

Inspector Joel said the man and woman were known to each other and there were no protective orders in place.

The gun police allege was used in the shooting was found in bushland near the Cammer- ay Rd house yesterday.

The gun was believed to be “stolen or otherwise illicit”, Inspector Joel said.

“Violence involving firearms is not acceptable and this young woman is so lucky not to have been killed or seriously maimed,” he said.

Forensics and ballistics experts were at the house yesterday and specialist officers were expected to interview the two children who were in the house at the time of the alleged shooting.

“They are not physically harmed,” Inspector Joel said.

Police also doorknocked the area and are appealing for information.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to speak to police officers at the scene or to report it to Crime Stoppers — which can be done anonymously — on 1800 333 000.

The man will appear court at a later date. in
