‘Wynett’ promises rich summer

-

WELL-BRED filly Gee Geer Wynett will be aimed at the state’s richest two-year-old events during the Sky Racing Tasmanian Summer Carnival following her impressive win at Elwick yesterday.

Gee Gee Wynett, prepared at Spreyton by brothers Dean and Trent Wells, showed her customary early speed to lead the six-horse field to the home turn. When rider Daniel Ganderton asked her to extend she went on to score comfortably from stablemate Gee Gee Runaway with the Stuart Gandy-trained Geegees First Lady a close-up third.

It was Gee Gee Wynett’s second start having debuted with a game second to Triple Step in Launceston.

She is by Wordsmith from Vivre La Nett and a full sister to Gee Gee Lanett.

“This filly is just like her full sister but maybe a little better,” said Trent Wells.

“She probably should have won on debut but she was hampered a bit by her stablemate ... but today’s win will get her into the good races.”

Gee Gee Wynett is owned by her breeders Paul and Elizabeth Geard. “The filly will stay in Hobart for a week and spend that time at her owners’ farm then come back to us to prepare for the Elwick Stakes [in February],” Wells said. LIGHTLY raced three-yearold Bosporus ($2.70) did enough at his fifth race start to score a narrow win in a maiden over 1100 metres.

The Stephen Shaw-trained gelding settled second behind the speedy Shorty Knox who set a solid tempo while welltried stablemates Gold Phoenix ($3.60) and Word Is If ($3.30) were off the speed but within striking distance.

But Shaw’s gelding was too strong at the business end.

Bosporus, ridden by Bulent Muhcu, scored by a half-length from the fast-finishing Cascade City ($21 into $13) with Shorty Knox a half-head away third.

“The horse did a few things wrong today but he still found a way to win,” Muhcu said. KALAKHANI broke through for her first win with a brilliant victory in the Christine Crook maiden over 1400 metres.

The Scott Brunton-trained four-year-old mare has taken time to mature but, given the ease with which she dispensed with her rivals yesterday, there should be more wins in store.
