Howrah gets a reality check

- ROB McGUIRE

AFTER defeating the previously unbeaten Sandy Bay last week, Howrah crashed back to earth this week when Dover RSL ended its own fiveweek losing streak, beating Howrah in a nailbiting finish by two shots in Bowls Tasmania South Division One Women’s Pennant on Thursday.

In hot and blustery conditions, Carol Bannister defeated Sally Ridgeway by seven shots and Sonia Martin finished two shots in front of Charon Foster. Howrah earned two pennant points with Rosie Geeves defeating Barb Liddington by six shots.

Ladder leader Sandy Bay bounced back from its surprise defeat to Howrah last week with a 13-shot win over Kingborough. The competition’s leading skip, Leonie Price, suffered a crushing 25-shot loss to Sandy Bay’s Chris Dowl. Winning all but three ends, Dowl was unstoppable and was already 20 shots up at lunch. After a slow start Yvonne Buckley recorded a 13 shot win over Carmel Rainbird. Scoring 17 unanswered shots in seven ends after the lunch break, Buckley was too strong for Rainbird. Kingborough’s Kathleen Page was in control all day against Robyn Leggett scoring multiple shots on many ends to secure a 25-shot win.

Sorell jumped into second position on the ladder with a come-from-behind away win over Buckingham by seven shots. Janet Cowen dropped nine shots on the first two ends against Jeanette Lane but restricted Lane to just four more shots over three ends for the rest of the game winning by 10 shots. Cowen virtually won the game on her own with some brilliant saving and winning shots throughout the game. With Julie Pursell playing well in the three position, Leona Smith defeated Alison Chamberlain in a tight tussle all day by three shots. Buckingham won on the other rink when June Guy defeated Sandra Hawksley by six shots.

Claremont defeated Brighton by 14 shots. Gaye Coleman was too good for Sue Grant, winning by 24 shots, and Joy Voss easily accounted for Val Lukasek by 18 shots. Brighton convincingly won on the other rink with Judy Williams defeating Ingrid Makowski by 28 shots.

Rosny Park surged into the four for the first time this season when they comprehensively beat bottom side New Norfolk by 43 shots, winning on all rinks. Gaylene Ridgeway easily defeated Carol BanksSmith by 24 shots, Chris McGrath beat Lyn Trifitt by 14 shots and Ailsa Milburn finished five shots in front of Leonie Hyland.
