Ban upsets Carr’s bid

- PETER STAPLES

SUSPENSIONS incurred by Siggy Carr at the Devonport meeting on December 8 could be costly for the talented young jockey as she strives to notch her first senior jockeys’ premiership.

Carr set her sights on a topthree finish at the start of the season and she is on target to achieve that goal but her form would suggest she has a great chance of winning the title.

A treble at Elwick last Friday coupled with a great frontrunning ride on Galeocerdo in Launceston last Wednesday night gave her four winners for the week to take her season tally to 23 wins, one behind the leader, Craig Newitt.

“I copped two meetings for excessive whip use and another meeting for causing interference in a race in which I pleaded guilty, so the mistakes ended up costing me three meetings, which means I won’t be able to ride again until New Year’s Day at Longford,” Carr said.

“It hate being suspended and it will be very frustrating watching three meetings go by from the sidelines,”

She has yet to secure a ride in the Longford Cup.

Carr was Tasmania’s leading apprentice before she headed to South Australia to enhance her riding career in 2014.

The year-long relocation worked well because she was one win off winning that state’s leading apprentice title and she earned a trip to Singapore to ride in races as part of her reward for being named dux of the SA apprentice school.

Since she returned to Tasmania in 2015 she has established herself as one of the state’s top three riders with full books at most meetings and the pick of the rides on Paul and Elizabeth Geard-owned horses.

Last Friday she produced top rides to secure her treble.

Her ride aboard Lady Jane for her father, Brighton trainer Royston Carr, was clever and courageous. She found the lead and then sent the mare four lengths clear going up the hill in the back straight which proved the winning move.

In the following race she gave race favourite Gee Gee Double Dee the run of the race to secure victory in a benchmark 82 event over 1200m, which could ensure she is offered the ride if the mare progresses to the Group 3 $125,000 Bow Mistress in Hobart in early February.

She capped the day with another top ride to secure victory aboard Gee Gees Can Tell for Team Wells in the last event on the seven-race card.

Newitt has made an impact since he decided to move back to Tasmania after spending almost 17 years interstate and mixing it with the best in Australia.

He has had an enormous impact and has helped bolster the strength of the state’s riding ranks. THE nine-race card in Launceston tomorrow night will boast two features in the $100,000 weight-for-age Tasmanian Stakes over 1600m and the 3YO Trophy over 1400m.

The Tasmanian Stakes boasts a strong line-up that includes Tasmanian horse of the year Hellova Street, who will be out to atone for a game second last start in the weightfor-age Conquering.

The 3YO Trophy boasts a small field of six but it is full of talent and consists of Mister Songman, last year’s best 2YO Pateena Arena, Gee Gee Lanett, Il Regalo, Gasnier and Overplay.
