CANES TOLD ‘OWN’ FAILS

- ADAM SMITH

HURRICANES wicket keeper Georgia Redmayne has urged the group’s struggling batters to take ownership of the continued collapses as the side strives to dig itself out of an early WBBL hole.

Hobart sank to 0-3 following Sunday’s disappointing loss to the Sydney Sixers at Blundstone Arena, crippled by a third straight batting disaster while chasing a sizeable target.

The Hurricanes lost 4-1 in the middle stages of Sunday’s pursuit of 153 — including a hat-trick to Sixers’ South African spinner Dane van Niekerk — before being held to 8-119.

Opener Redmayne, who was just as critical of her own performance in absorbing 29 balls for 22, insists morale has not dropped following the horror start and hopes the problems can be rectified ahead of Saturday’s return stoush with the Sixers in Sydney.

“It is disappointing . . . it was definitely a total we would have liked to chase down,” Redmayne said.

“Probably something to look at with our batting going forward. We didn’t really have anyone go on with it and that’s been the case for the first couple of games this season.

“It’s definitely something we are trying to work on. We have got some good players in our team and taking that responsibility, especially in run chases as well.

“Looking to go forward hopefully we can have not one but several of our batters posting some big scores.

“From my individual perspective, I’m probably the type of player who wants to work around more of the power hitters and trying to bat through.

“But we also want to make a bit more use of the powerplay at the start. I think chasing larger totals we want to try and get some more boundaries.”

Redmayne is confident one victory can help release the shackles, declaring the Hurricanes’ tournament far from buried.

“It is such a long tournament, there are 14 games we play and as you saw in the first season, the Sixers lost seven in a row at the start and then made the finals.

“I definitely wouldn’t say we are out of it at all, we just need to turn it around and get some good performances together.

“Momentum is probably the big thing in this competition. If you get one win you can start the ball rolling.”
