Sorell flies under radar to slide into second spot

SORELL won its fifth game in a row by defeating Claremont by six shots and is the surprise packet of Bowls Tasmania South Division One Women’s Pennant, sitting in second position going into the three-week Christmas break.

With Vicki Philp leading extremely well and Margaret Robinson playing very solidly, Jan Cowen defeated Joy Voss by eight shots. After an even first half, Leona Smith gradually got on top of Ingrid Makowski, thanks to some great shots from Julie Pursell, winning by eight shots. Claremont’s Gaye Coleman had a day out in her 10-shot win over Sandra Hawksley.

Sandy Bay defeated Brighton by 18 shots. Chris Dowl secured the overall win for Sandy Bay with a 19-shot win over Val Lukasek. Yvonne Buckley took the lead early but six shots in three ends put Brighton’s Judy Williams in front with five ends to play.

Buckley steadied and scraped home with a one-shot win. Robyn Leggett and Sue Grant also had a close contest. Brighton’s Grant took the ascendancy with five shots on the eighth end when the jack was trailed into the ditch. Leggett fought back to trail by only one shot with three ends to play but Grant rallied to take the points by two shots.

Buckingham stopped Rosny Park’s recent run of wins when it stormed home to win by six shots. Alison Chamberlai­n raced to a 12-shot lead after seven ends against Chris McGrath. McGrath fought back to get within four shots after 15 ends but she could not maintain the momentum with Chamberlai­n winning by 10 shots. Jeanette Lane beat Ailsa Milburn by three shots. Gaylene Ridgeway secured two points for Rosny Park when she defeated June Guy by seven shots.

Despite scores being level, Kingboroug­h defeated Howrah after winning on two rinks. Leonie Price defeated Lynne McDougall. Price was 11 shots up at the lunch break, and went on to win by eight shots.

In the absence of Kathleen Page, Vicki Bannister moved up to the skip’s position and played some superb draw shots to thwart Rosie Geeves. Bannister led all day, being eight shots up at the lunch break, and held on to win by two. Carmel Rainbird went down to Charon Foster by 10 shots.
