DRAMATIC footage has emerged of a black Audi speeding in Point Cook, in Melbourne’s west, moments before it crashed into another car, leaving three people dead and a woman with serious injuries.

Timestamped 6.33pm because of daylight saving, the CCTV captured the Audi just before the head-on collision shortly after 7.30pm on Christmas Eve.

A resident who lives close to where the fiery crash happened said he was shocked to see how fast the driver was going.

“My outside CCTV cameras caught the driver of the Audi doing at least double the legal speed limit,” Donald, who declined to give his last name, said.

“My daughter called me and I ran outside to see if I could help in any way.

“This is just a horrific tragedy to happen on Christmas Eve. Families are now without loved ones.”

The damage from the fiery high-speed collision was so horrific that police were unable to identify two of the deceased, authorities said.

Victoria Police confirmed yesterday that the three deceased had yet to be formally identified.

A 35-year-old woman who was travelling in the second car was initially fighting for life, but her condition has since improved.

She is now in a serious but stable condition, and no longer listed as critical.

Detours remained in place yesterday after the incident, which happened 23km west of the Melbourne CBD.

A shocking image of the scene showed one car engulfed in flames, with the wreckage of the other vehicle lying upsidedown on the road.

Two occupants in one car and one person in the second car died at the scene at Point Cook.

A witness, who did not wish to be named, said she was sitting at the bus stop when a black car sped past.

“They were going so fast, I only had a second to step back from the road, I was so taken by surprise,” she said.

“Seconds later, I heard a crash. I thought the driver was doing a stunt manoeuvre at the time it happened. They came over on to the right side of the road.”

Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer said the driver and passenger of the black Audi could not be identified because of the horrific damage to the car.

“At excessive speed, it’s lost control and it’s had a head-on [collision] with a small Jazz heading the other way that’s contained two women,” he said.

“Two innocent people just trying to probably get home to wrap presents and they’ve never made it.

“The vehicle that was speeding … The impact was extreme when this occurred and that vehicle has been incinerated.

“We don’t know what sex they are.

“The sort of speeds we’re talking about to cause this devastation are just crazy.”

Mr Fryer said the Audi was not known to police, with drug and alcohol tests to come.

The Major Collision Investigation Unit will investigate the incident and police will prepare a report for the coroner. exactly
