Ways to ring in 2018

- LORETTA LOHBERGER and STEPHANIE NEWINGTON DRESS-UP: James Holland, left, Tahlia Murray, Luis Mora gear up for New Year’s at St Albi. PARTY TIME: The Nightshift will play at ‘Regines is Back’ at Wrest Point.

FROM fireworks to Falls, cocktail parties to contemporary art, Southern Tasmanians will be spoiled for choice when it comes to how they welcome the new year.

The Glenorchy Art and Sculpture Park, GASP, will hold its second New Year’s Eve event this year, featuring two indigenous dance troupes, Pakana Kanaplila from Tasmania and Gooniyandi Dancers from Fitzroy Crossing in WA’s Kimberley Region.

“It’s an extraordinary coming together of two Aboriginal dance groups from opposite sides of the continent,” GASP director Jonathan Kimberley said.

“They’re both performing what they call devil devil dances. It’s the first time that two devil devil dances have come together from opposite sides of the continent.”

Mr Kimberley said the event would also include experimental sound art and music, and food and drinks will also be available for purchase.

Mr Kimberley said the event would be “chilled and sophisticated”.

“Move into the new year in a new way,” he said.

Also in the northern suburbs, Moonah restaurant St Albi will host a cocktail style soiree to welcome the new year in style.

Party goers are asked to dress to the nines and the restaurant will be decorated by florist Prue Mclaren.

The Hobart waterfront will be the place to see the annual New Year’s Eve fireworks at 9.30pm and again at midnight.

The Taste of Tasmania will be a ticketed event for New Year’s Eve, with a music lineup headlined by The Whitlams.

Hobart’s Waratah Hotel will hold a New Year’s Eve beer garden party featuring Fleetmac Wood starting at 6pm.

Among Wrest Point Hotel Casino’s New Year’s Eve events is the sold out ‘ Regines is Back’, featuring cover band The Nightshift and DJ SupaNova. Regines has only opened its doors a handful of times since it closed in 2003.

Disc jockey Steve from Su- paNova Mobile Discotheques, said the Wrest Point event aimed to bring back the vibe of the club scene from the 1970s through to the 1990s.

“It’s going to be a retrospec- tive night of how things used to be,” said the DJ, who joined the business in 1989.

“It used to be much more personal, we used to invite people up onstage to have a go on the decks. We want to bring back the Regines nightclub experience for audiences young and old.”

At the Falls Festival at Marion Bay, electronic music duo Peking Duk will be on stage as the clock strikes midnight.
