Critical that we get the change right

- CHRIS JONES Editor of the Mercury newspaper

IT’S an exciting time to be Tasmanian.

Our economy is going strong, developers and homebuyers want to invest in our state, and millions of people right around the world dream of coming here.

But, as we all know, this also means it’s also a time of change. And, as with all change, it is sometimes difficult.

As Tasmanians we are up for it. We know our state is changing. And we want it to change. But we want it to be the right kind of change. We know if we get it right Tasmania’s best times are just around the corner.

If we get it wrong, however, the consequences could be massive.

As the editor of the state’s largest news brand — a brand that has been a daily part of Tasmania’s life for 163 years — I am passionate about the role we can, and should, play in this debate.

And, so, ahead of the State Election due in March, I am proud the Mercury is kicking off 2018 with a reader-led deep-dive into what are the right choices for Tasmania.

Our team of experienced Tasmanian journalists will take this opportunity to explore every facet, from planning, development and transport through to tourism, technology and agriculture.

We will look at the critical role arts and culture are playing in the new Tasmania, and we will investigate how best the Government can deliver for us in health and education. We will focus on the opportunities and threats facing us, and what the community and government sectors need to do to ensure a bright future.

We will talk to real Tasmanians about what kind of a place they want this state to be four years from now, and into the future. And we will invite thought leaders from across the state to also contribute their views.

This campaign is supported commercially by Tasmanian icons the Federal Group, the University of Tasmania, Tassal, The Spirit of Tasmania, the Hobart Private Hospital and TasTAFE. Each of them has chosen to make this investment to show their support for this conversation.

But this campaign is not about our commercial partners and supporters. It’s about you, our valued readers — and what you want for this state.

The Mercury has always advocated for a better Tasmania. Tassie 2022 is the next step in delivering on that commitment to our readers, and to the community we are proud to serve every day.

I invite all Tasmanians from every part of this great state to join us in this venture — to contribute your ideas and thoughts, and to have your say on how we can all work together to ensure this amazing place reaches its full potential.

We will talk to real Tasmanians about what kind of a place they want this state to be four years from now, and into the future.
