Phillips goes low to snare Cup and Champions

DEVONPORT Golf Club hosted a successful Morcom Cup/Champion of Champions for men and women’s 36hole stroke events at the weekend.

The 54-hole Morcom Cup resulted in a four-stroke victory to Andrew Phillips from the Tasmania Golf Club.

Phillips shot rounds of 67, 69 and 67, giving him a seven-under-par total of 203 and a healthy buffer over Prospect Vale junior member Ryan Thomas.

Phillips won the Champion of Champions event, firing 69 and 67 during the Sunday rounds.

Georgia Milbourne, from the Tasmania Golf Club, won the 36-hole stroke event for women with rounds of 72 and 73, a total of 145.

Ulverstone Golf Club’s Sarah Johnstone finished four strokes adrift of Milbourne on 149 after rounds of 75 and 74. GOLF Tasmania has announced its men’s team for the 2018 Australian men’s interstate teams matches.

Launceston Golf Club’s Mitch Van Noord will captain the eight-man team for the first time, at Grange Golf Club in Adelaide from May 8-11.

Iron Pot Golf Club member Gary Purdon will manage the team while Tasmania Golf Club profession­al Nick White has been named coach. Men’s team: Nathan Gatehouse (Tasmania), Craig Hancock (Wynyard), Richard Kube (Tasmania), Andrew Phillips (Tasmania), Paul Read (Tasmania), Mark Schulze (vice-captain, Tasmania), Ryan Thomas (Prospect Vale), Mitch Van Noord (captain, Launceston), Nick White (coach, Tasmania) and Gary Purdon (manager, Iron Pot).
