Play equipment woes

- Carolyn Williams Eveleigh, NSW Deborah Stewart West Hobart

HOBART City Council has installed an enormous piece of equipment in the playground at John Doggett Park at West Hobart. Given the excavation, footings and general work, I am sure it cost a pretty penny. But it is the ugliest piece of playground equipment I’ve ever seen. With its huge enclosed slide, it looks like it’s arrived straight from the Abbot Point coal terminal in Queensland. We visit this park daily. Since this piece of equipment, which looks dangerous, was installed, we haven’t observed a person use it. How does council make decisions about playground equipment? How much did it cost? The funding could have been put to better use by upgrading the deteriorating grassed area outside the fenced playground.
