Boyce chances arm, snares record

- JAMES BRESNEHAN

SULTAN of spin Cameron Boyce is now the king of bowlers at Blundstone Arena after a Big Bash milestone that will take some toppling.

The moment Boyce fooled Brisbane Heat batter Alex Ross with his arm ball and lit up his stumps, the Hurricanes spinner achieved two objectives.

He all but laid to rest the furore surrounding the controversial run out last time they met at the Gabba when Ross was sent on his way for obstructing the field in a potential run-out, thus “robbing” Brisbane of his talents in its failed run-chase.

Last night, Ross went cheaply, four runs off seven balls, gifting Boyce his fifth wicket of BBL07 and the record for the most Big Bash wickets at a single venue.

The Hurricanes spinner has taken his career haul to 28 wickets at Blundstone Arena, eclipsing the 27 by Jason Behrendorff at the WACA and 27 by Ben Laughlin at Adelaide Oval.

The 28-year-old leg spinner from Queenslander also reached the 50-wicket milestone, and in his time with the Hurricanes has a best bowling performance of 3-9 and an economy rate of 8.02.

Boyce has a BBL07 record of five wickets for 170 runs off 147 balls at a rate of 6.94 runs per over.

On the flipside, Tymal Mills is in contention to be the competition’s most expensive bowler but is more exposed as cannon fodder in the power plays and “death” overs.

Mills has six for 221 off 138 balls for a run rate of 9.75.
