Selection, tactics wrong in bad loss

- BEN HORNE

AUSTRALIA has launched a review into its worst one-day slump since Mark Taylor was dumped from the captaincy in 1998.

The 2015 World Cup winners have a recent record worse than Afghanistan and Bangladesh with one win from 12 matches and national selector Trevor Hohns said enough was enough.

Hohns promised an overhaul leading into next year’s World Cup defence in the UK.

He said Australia had its personnel and tactics wrong since it was crowned world champ at the MCG in 2015 and changes were imminent after a 3-0 series loss to England.

The home team will have to find something immediately to avoid a whitewash with the final two matches to be played this weekend.

The door is open again for spin king Nathan Lyon to fight his way back into the ODI side, while Victorian star Glenn Maxwell may be back in vogue with Hohns vowing more “hitting power” is needed.

“With what’s happened recently, we are reviewing how we’re actually playing the game and the type of player that’s required in the one-day format,” he said.

“We haven’t played well in this series, we don’t seem to have been able to put it all together on the one day and there has been something lacking.

“We’ve got a bit of work to do. With the World Cup in 2019 there is a lot of one-day cricket to be played between now and then. We will be trying to get together the main nucleus of our squad so they can play together for some time.”
