Wonder what’s coming up Necks

-

AUSTRALIA’S acclaimed “artists-in-resonance” — Sydney jazz improv trio The Necks — will play it by ear when they return to Hobart next weekend.

Since forming in 1987, The Necks — Lloyd Swanton (bass), Chris Abrahams (piano) and Tony Buck (drums) — have developed a cult following across Australia and around the world.

Not entirely avant-garde, nor minimalist, nor ambient, nor jazz, the music made by The Necks is uniquely theirs. No two of the group’s live shows are the same, because they completely improvise every unpredictable performance.

Featuring lengthy, experimental, mesmerising pieces that slowly unravel, The Necks’ 18 albums — including the ARIA Award-winning Drive By (2003) and Chemist (2006) — reveal something new with each listen.

The Necks enjoyed one of the busiest years of their 30-year career in 2017, including opening for Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds on their Australian tour; releasing the acclaimed double- album Unfold; successfully touring the US (once) and Europe (three times); and being the subject of a major feature article in The New York Times.

Now they are back in Australia to perform a series of east coast shows and mix their new album, which is scheduled for release this year.

The Necks play in Mona’s Nolan Gallery from 8pm next Saturday (February 10). Tickets are $45, $40 concession, pre-sale from www.mona.net.au, or $50/$45 at the door, if not already sold out.
