- ROB McGUIRE

A VERY even last four teams will contest the semi-finals and the grand final of the Bowls Tasmania South women’s over 60s fours championships at New Norfolk tomorrow.

In the quarter-finals held last Wednesday, Dover RSL’s Carol Bannister defeated Sandy Bay’s Yvonne Buckley by one shot, Rosny Park’s Ailsa Milburn accounted for Howrah’s Denise Reeves by 23 shots, Sandy Bay’s Laura Best beat the in-form Lyn Triffitt by three shots and Beltana’s Kaye Sproule defeated Glenorchy City’s Ingrid Makowski by seven shots.

In the semi-finals Bannister will play Milburn and Best is up against Sproule. THE action in Bowls Tasmania South’s Friday night super pairs competition moves to Buckingham tomorrow, starting at 6.30pm.

Buckingham will play Beltana, Brighton meets Sandy Bay, which forfeited last week, Claremont takes on Howrah and the game of the night is between Rosny Park and Glenorchy Rodman. THE second round of Bowls Tasmania’s junior statewide challenge involving representative junior teams from Launceston, the North West Coast and Hobart was held in extremely hot conditions at the Longford Bowls Club on Sunday.

The Southern juniors had a mixed day, winning and losing one of the morning triples games while it drew one pairs game and lost the other.

In the afternoon games, the Southern juniors lost both their fours games and won one and lost the other singles games.

Bowls South remain at the top of the leaderboard after the second round with 28½ points, narrowly in front of Bowls North with 27 points and Bowls North West on 16½ points. THE second round of Bowls Tasmania’s seniors (over 60s) statewide challenge will be held at the New Norfolk Bowls Club on Tuesday.

The Southern men’s and women’s teams won their games in the first round held in Launceston in December, but have to field a second men’s and women’s team this round, which will make it harder to continue their unbeaten runs.

Bowls Tasmania South is seeking the views of as many players as possible on a number of issues concerning the future of the sport — including calls for a statewide conditions of play, the current length of pennant, increasing numbers of requests for dispensation from conditions of play, requests for all pennant competition to become open gender and a range of other issues.

Players have until the end of this month to respond to the survey.
