Phantoms get jump on Condors

-

PHANTOMS held off a combative Condors to snatch a 4-2 victory in Round 14 of the Southern Touch League men’s premier division.

Phantoms got the jump on Condors, taking a 3-1 lead to the break. Simon Sullivan starred for the victors, coming off the back of a weekend competing at a knockout tournament in Yass.

Pirates had a comfortable win against Tigers in the second of the men’s matches, improving on a 4-2 halftime scoreline to run out eventual 8-2 winners. Pirates were best served by Ashton King, who also competed in Yass with a Victorian team, and Toby Jackson, both finishing with two scores each.

In the women’s division, Tigers secured the minor premiership with a commanding 11-4 victory over Sharks, who came out firing and ran in the first score but couldn’t sustain their vigour as Tigers wrestled back the ascendancy.

Tiger Katelyn Barry controlled play and directed her troops well, helping Jessica McDonald cross the line for three scores, while scoring two of her own. She was ably assisted by Anna Stott in both attack and defence.

Phantoms and Condors fought out a gruelling affair in the final match of the round, with nothing separating the two at the end.

Condors got the jump with Maddison Smith threatening to tear the game apart. Two first-half scores to Kayla Southern gave them a slight advantage at the break.

Phantoms rallied and returned with a more even contribution as Chante Ellerton lifted. Three scores to Rebecca Norquay closed the deficit. Time was the enemy to all as the final siren sounded, resulting in a 7-7 draw.
