Wasteful City loses ground to United

-

MANCHESTER City’s lead at the top of the Premier League was cut to 13 points yesterday as it was held to a draw at Burnley, while nearest challenger Manchester United beat Huddersfield.

Danilo’s opener for City was cancelled out late by Johann Berg Edmundsson in a 1-1 draw at seventh-placed Burnley, while Alexis Sanchez scored his first United goal in a 2-0 win over Huddersfield.

Arsenal boosted its top-four hopes with Aaron Ramsey netting a hat-trick in a 5-1 demolition of Everton, while West Brom remains bottom after it was beaten 3-2 at home by Southampton.

City dropped points for only the fourth time this season after Burnley withstood a first-half barrage to pinch a late equaliser.

“We controlled the game, but when we arrived in the last minutes at 1-0, there is danger,” City manager Pep Guardiola said. “We played so good, we just missed the last moment to try to score the second one.”

Danilo fired City in front with a superb finish on 22 minutes, but the visitors paid for missing several chances.

Burnley replied when Berg Gudmundsson poked home the equaliser eight minutes from time.

United closed the gap after victory against Huddersfield, having commemorated the 60th anniversary of the Munich air disaster, on February 6, 1958, when eight United players were among those to lose their lives. On the pitch, United stayed patient for 55 minutes before Romelu Lukaku put Jose Mourinho’s side in front. Sanchez doubled the lead on 68 minutes.
