Security tightened for new tally room
SECURITY will be beefed up at the state election’s new tally room with an increased police presence.
The tally room will move to the Hotel Grand Chancellor on Hobart’s waterfront after decades at Wrest Point Casino.
Tasmania is the last state to persist with a tally room, continuing a long election-night tradition.
“This is seen as a very important part of the ritual of voting in Tasmania, that the people are heard and the leaders of the parties then respond at the tally room,” Tasmanian Electoral Commissioner Andrew Hawkey said.
It is understood security will be similar to that for a Hobart Hurricanes T20 cricket match, with more police checks and passes for those working at the count.
The extra vigilance comes with the national terrorism threat level at “probable”.
Tasmania Police Assistant Commissioner Glenn Frame said talks with the TEC would ensure an appropriate presence form officers.
“Tasmania Police liaises with the organisers of major events to ensure the appropriate level of security is in place for the safety of patrons,” Asst Comm Frame said.
“However, Tasmania Police does not comment on security arrangements.”
Wrest Point was unable to take the booking because of another event, but also became less attractive when its owner, Federal Group, became involved in campaigning against Labor’s poker machine policy.
The TEC has put measures in place to ensure as many Tasmanians as possible cast their vote. They include television and online advertisements and a Vote Alert SMS reminder, which voters can opt into.
