Enjoy a wild ride with Steve
WOLLONGONG singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Steve Robinson rides into Hobart next week for one show only.
Robinson uses guitar, trumpet, piano and vocals to create a live show that blends elements of indie blues, folk, psychedelic soul and rock ’n’ roll into something once described as “Bob Dylan goes to the circus”.
Robinson spent much of his early musical life trying to get out of the ’Gong, but got sidetracked and ended up revitalising the city’s music scene.
One of his bands, A Comedy of Errors, was considered too eclectic to get a gig. So Robinson took matters into his own hands and began booking original acts at the Oxford Tavern, which became the city’s hub of creativity and live music for more than 30 years.
Over those three decades Robinson performed thousands of gigs, both solo and with bands such as Big Blue Bus, Pan’s Daughter and Money Killed Jonny.
He has shared stages with acts such as Midnight Oil, the Whitlams, the Cruel Sea and the Doug Anthony All Stars.
Robinson has also written and performed the music for films, theatre productions and circus shows, and recorded as a session player for Sydney independent label Half a Cow Records.
After releasing two successful albums with his band Money Killed Jonny, Robinson revisited his solo roots for his latest release, On
the Wings of a Wild Thing, “an album about love and freedom set against the constraints of political and social instability, greed, arrogance and entitlement”.
Robinson is bringing his new live concept, Steve Rides A Bike, to Tasmania next week. Joined by local singer-songwriter David Beniuk, he performs at The Homestead in North Hobart from 8pm next Friday (February 16). Entry is free.
