A dose of confusion is brewing

-

LEGENDARY laugh-starter Anthony Morgan will bring his “ultimately satisfying but thoroughly confusing” brand of stand-up to Hobart comedy room The Clubhouse next week.

Known for his freewheeling, frequently shambolic and often improvised style, Morgan has been performing since 1982, using stand-up in an attempt to come to grips with domestic, political and social life.

Morgan’s many TV appearances made him an unlikely comedy superstar in the 1990s, as he made regular appearances on shows such as The Big Gig,

Hey, Hey It’s Saturday and Tonight Live. In 1994 he became the Melbourne correspondent for Denton, which involved boxing against world champions, proclaiming his love to Kylie Minogue, and getting a tattoo of Lenny Bruce on his back.

Morgan was a favourite with Melbourne International Comedy Festival audiences, becoming the first Australian comedian to sell out multiple shows at the 1300-seat Melbourne Town Hall.

He performed every MICF until 1998, when he stunned the audience by announcing live on stage that he was retiring from comedy and moving to a farm near Cygnet.

But Morgan couldn’t stay away from the stage for long, and his “retirement” only lasted until 2000.

He only performs stand-up occasionally these days, but has been popping up in TV programs such as Spicks & Specks, Sam Simmons’ Problems, Ronny

Chieng: International Student, and Rosehaven. Anthony Morgan headlines this month’s instalment of The Clubhouse at the Hobart Brewing Co (Macquarie Point) from 8pm next Thursday (February 15). He’ll be joined by local supports and host Tim Logan. Tickets are $25 pre-sale from

www.trybooking.com, or $30 at the door (if not already sold out).
