Flower power fills cathedral

- — PENNY THOW

ST David’s Cathedral will celebrate 50 years of annual community floral festivals this weekend with a concert featuring music spanning the centuries and continents.

Running from tomorrow until Sunday, the St David’s Cathedral Floral Festival will feature displays of flowers from more than 50 church and community groups; offer visitors the chance to explore the cathedral and climb the bell town on Saturday; and culminate with a concert in the cathedral from 2pm on Sunday.

Concert co-ordinator Jo-Anne Kemp said the program would be an eclectic mix of music — from 17th century Baroque to 20th century Australian works — with performances by choirs, organ, oboes and pianos.

The Tasmanian Chorale will sing Choruses 2, 5 and 12 from CPE Bach’s Ascension and Resurrection Oratorio; and organist Peter Warren will play Carillion by English composer Herbert Murrill and Chorale in A Minor by Cesar Franck.

Organist Rod Thompson will play the adagio from Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto in D, and Toccata and Fugue in D minor by JS Bach.

Kemp and fellow pianist Nicholas Bostock will perform Toccata for Two by Miriam Hyde, and Kemp will play a number of solo works, including Hyde’s Evening in Cordoba.

Concert tickets are $10, available at the door.
