Northern teams dominate statewide titles

AFTER being unbeaten in the first two rounds of Bowls Tasmania’s Senior’s State Wide Challenge in December, the Bowls South teams came unstuck in the third and fourth rounds held at the New Norfolk Bowls Club on Tuesday.

The Bowls North teams won all four games contested to take honours on the day.

The Southern men’s first team defeated Bowls North West by eight shots but was beaten by Bowls North by 12 shots. The Southern men’s second team lost both its games, to Bowls North by 16 shots and to Bowls North West by 38. The Southern women’s first team defeated Bowls North West by four shots but was easily beaten by Bowls North by 23. The Southern women’s second team lost to Bowls North by 15 shots but hit back to beat Bowls North West by 10. SANDY Bay’s Laura Best, Lynn Barlow, Jac Phillips and Ann Hinkley took the honours in Bowls South Women’s Over-60s Fours Championsh­ips at New Norfolk last Friday. Best defeated Rosny Park’s Ailsa Milburn in the grand final by two shots. In the semi-finals, Best defeated Beltana’s Kaye Sproule by 17 shots and Milburn beat Dover RSL’s Carol Bannister by nine shots. IN THE Bowls South Super Pairs held last Friday, Sandy Bay was too good for Brighton winning 15-3 and 5-5, Rosny Park defeated Glenorchy Rodman 7-3 and 9-4 and Buckingham beat Beltana 11-4 and 7-5. In the closest game of the night, Howrah defeated Claremont 4-10, 16-5 and 2-0 in the tie-breaker. This week’s games will be held at Brighton. THE first rounds of the Bowls South Men’s and Women’s Open and B Grade Singles championsh­ips were played on Sunday. In the Men’s Open Championsh­ips, Cam Tegg, Scott Booth, Michael Rankin, Isaac Maughan, Darren Beattie, Rod Turner, Josh Baker, Lee Schraner, Grant Chamberlai­n, James Howell, Jarrod Long, Paul Cruise, Shane Baker, Connor Munnings and Brad Carver won their way through to the next round.

In the Men’s B Grade Championsh­ips, Michael Hughes, Stephen Lockley, Milton Lowe, Robert Lockley, Ray McDonald, Rob Winterbott­om, Kevin Mann, Michael Hays, Brad Johns, Peter Dunlop, Graeme Allen and Peter Cavanagh progressed to the next round.

Sectional winners in the Women’s Open Championsh­ips were Di Jones, Denise Tanner, Amity Booth, Jenny Tirant, Vicky Bannister, Lyn Triffitt and Jorja Maughan.
