Broken hand won’t stop boxing champ

- KYLE WISNIEWSKI

LUKE “Action” Jackson is remaining positive about a setback that has made him move his fight and prepare with one hand.

A recurring right-hand injury has meant Jackson has rescheduled his fight with South American featherweight champion Alan Castillo from March 2 to April 27.

The injury first occurred when Jackson was fighting Joel Brunker in 2007.

“It’s an old injury that flares up from time to time,” Jackson said.

“I broke it on Joel Brunker’s rib in 2007 in the second round.

“I fought the next two rounds with a broken hand and I was still able to win.”

The injury has left Jackson preparing with only the ability to punch with one hand, but that hasn’t stopped him from stepping up his training.

“I have to take a positive look,” he said.

“I now have more time to get fitter and stronger. With an opponent of this quality I can’t afford not to be at my best.

“I just have to train without punching for a few weeks.”

The undefeated WBO featherweight champion has spent some time in Sydney training with Lenny Zappavigna and he is now back in Hobart preparing for the fight billed as “next level” because of the step up in Jackson’s opponent and venue.

This will be Jackson’s first fight at Wrest Point in Hobart and his opponent Castillo has a longer pro record with 23 fights (nine by KO) and seven defeats compared with the Hobartian’s 15-0 win-loss professional record.
