Zampa queries spin strategies

LEG-SPINNER Adam Zampa has questioned whether Australia is behind the curve when it comes to Twenty20 selections ahead of its tri-series clash with England in Melbourne tonight.

The Melbourne Stars tweaker is yet to learn whether he’ll be recalled for the match at the MCG after missing out when the two sides met in Hobart.

Zampa, pictured above, could only watch on Wednesday night as left-armer Ashton Agar (2-15) and part-timer Glenn Maxwell (3-10) shared in the spoils in a five-wicket victory.

Frustrated by the lack of certainty around his spot, Zampa has suggested Australia may be missing a trick with its reluctance to employ two specialist spinners. While the practice has become common in domestic T20 leagues and other international sides, it has been a rarity for Australia during Zampa’s time.

“That’s one of the questions that I asked [selectors] the other night,” he said yesterday.

“A lot of countries around the world are opting for two wrist-spinners, let alone no wrist-spinners. It’s just the grounds and the situations we’ve got ourselves in probably that make it a little bit different in Australia. I think wrist spin is definitely the way forward in particular and even two or three spinners in a team.

“We saw the other night that it was the two spinners that changed the game for us so I think definitely having a wristspinner that can spin it both ways is always good to have in your team.”

Zampa claimed 1-21 during Australia’s series-opening win over New Zealand in Sydney.
