Tassie stint steels Scott for Tests

- JAMES KITTO

HE has played Test cricket for England, dismissing the likes of Brad Haddin and Chris Rogers; now Scott Borthwick has Cricket Tasmania’s Premier League batsmen in a spin.

The English all-rounder, who debuted for England in a Sydney Ashes Test in 2014, has spent the past four years out of international cricket, and while the 27-year-old is gunning to reignite his short-lived Test career, he has found himself playing with North Hobart.

After scoring 89 off 81 balls against New Town in Round 15, before taking 3-15 against South Hobart-Sandy Bay last weekend, Borthwick has proven a standout in the CTPL in recent weeks. The leg-spinner said he had enjoyed playing in Tasmania, but would now return home to his home club of Surrey.

“The standard of cricket here in Tasmania is really good, particularly when the state players are available to play,” he said. “I’ve enjoyed my time here, but I’m looking forward to getting back to Surrey to start the season off. To get back into the England side is definitely my long-term goal — being there already and having the taste of it, you want to keep striving for that.

“With my career changing in the last four years, I’ve become a No. 3 batsman and more of an all-rounder, which is certainly different from batting eight at the SCG Test. That [Ashes Test] feels like a long time ago now, but to get the chance to play on a packed Sydney house was an unbelievable feeling.”

Borthwick’s North Hobart teammates will have to be at their best today when they take on ladder-leader Clarence at Kangaroo Bay, while Glenorchy hosts Lindisfarne, Kingborough travels up the outlet to take on South Hobart-Sandy Bay and University and New Town clash at Uni Oval.
